THE 1872
CENSUS
The more
interesting statistics from the 1872 census are shown in
the Tables that follow. As in future censi the main
figures do not include members of the garrison. The
total civilian population was 19,289, which is the total
of all those recorded in Tables 1 and 2, although the
Tables themselves were based on different criteria.
Children under a certain age (12?) were not included in
the census.

Fortunately statistics for 1872 are also available for
the garrison. The next Table shows the numbers for the
two battalions in the garrison on the date of the
census. The establishment for a battalion of the Indian
Army was for 8 officers. Either the eighth British
officer or an Indian officer would have been commanding
the detachment on Perim.
