Camels

There is no other animal which is so recognisably 'Arabian' as the camel. A supercilious-looking creature with knock knees, an odd gait and a reputation for nastiness, which is why many were muzzled.

Several types of camel were to be seen in Aden. They were used for a variety of purposes such as riding, burden, pulling water carts, lime-crushing, drawing well-water and as mounts for the Camel Troop of the Aden Protectorate Levies.

In the early days camels could be seen in The Crescent in Steamer Point, an attraction for tourists who would be given rides. The picture to the right dates from 1904.
