The Duke of Buckingham
The Duke of Buckingham & Chandos, Richard
Plantagenet Campbell Temple Nugent Brydges
Chandos Grenville (1823-89), visited Aden in
November 1875. He was travelling on HMS
Sultan on his way to become Governor of
Madras, a position he held for five years.
Whilst in India he organised relief and
employment on a prolific scale. By the end
of July 1876, nearly a million people were
receiving relief in the Madras districts
alone. At the instigation of the Duke, the
Lord Mayor of London organised a relief fund
which raised £475,000 for Madras.
