The Duke of Buckingham

The Duke of Buckingham & Chandos, Richard Plantagenet Campbell Temple Nugent Brydges Chandos Grenville (1823-89), visited Aden in November 1875. He was travelling on HMS Sultan on his way to become Governor of Madras, a position he held for five years.

Whilst in India he organised relief and employment on a prolific scale. By the end of July 1876, nearly a million people were receiving relief in the Madras districts alone. At the instigation of the Duke, the Lord Mayor of London organised a relief fund which raised £475,000 for Madras.

A former chairman of London and North-Western Railway, the Duke was from March 1867 to December 1868 Secretary of State for the Colonies. He was the 3rd Duke, having succeeded to the title in 1861. He had no male heir and the dukedom died with him.
