HMS FOX
During WW1 HMS Fox
was the flagship of
the Royal Navy’s
small Red Sea
Squadron (sometimes
described as the Red
Sea Patrol). Built
in 1893 and with a
top speed of just
under 20 knots this
4,000 ton second
class cruiser was
far too slow and
obsolescent to
operate with the
Grand Fleet.
Depending on the
threat, HMS Fox
operated out of Port
Sudan, Suez or Aden.
She mounted two 6-in
and eight 4.7-in
guns. She had a crew
of 310 and her
bunkers could hold
400 tons of coal.
