Brigadier-General John Jopp
Jopp, after whom the Jopp Promenade was named, was born
in 1840. Soon after joining the Army he served for a
time in Aden (1858). He went on the Abyssinian
expedition and was involved in the Afghan War. He was
promoted Colonel in 1886 and from 1890-95 he was
Political Resident in Aden, double-hatted as a 2nd
Class District Commander in the rank of
Brigadier-General. He was appointed CB in 1894 and was
an ADC to the Queen from 1895-97. He died in 1923.
