BRITISH REGIMENTS IN ADEN PRE-CARDWELL
Prior to the
Cardwell Reforms of 1881 British regiments were known by
their number. This number was based on their seniority
according to the year the Regiment was raised; for
example the Royal Fusiliers was one of nine regiments
raised in 1685 became the 7th of Foot, whilst
the 41st were only raised in 1719.

The table below shows those Regiments

amended as other information becomes known.

Notes
* It is perhaps not
surprising that the 7th spent less than a
year in Aden, as they had begun their Indian tour in
December 1857, having come there from the Crimea!
** This was a European
regiment of the East India Company. Post-Cardwell it
became the 2nd Bn. of the King’s own Yorkshire Light
Infantry.
*** Post-Cardwell the 25th
became the King’s Own Scottish Borderers. They would be
back in Aden again in 1906 and in 1962. |
