Hassan Ali Bayoomi
Hassan Ali Bayoomi was born in Aden in 1915 of a poorish
middle-class family believed to have
originated in Egypt and long-settled in
Crater.
Known as a
man of principle he held a passion for
justice, which as a politician led him to
strive for better conditions for his fellow
Adenis. |

During the term of Sir William Luce as
Governor of Aden Bayoomi had become Minister
for Labour. In this role he successfully
steered a new Industrial Relations Ordinance
through the Legislative Council which
effectively cut short the spate of political
strikes and induced a long period of
industrial peace.
Despite the
constant threat of assassination he
steadfastly maintained his political
objectives and was the clear choice for
appointment as Aden's new Chief Minister. Appointed by the Governor,
Sir Charles
Johnston, he held the position from 17th January 1963
to
24th June 1963.
Being a little overweight for his height, a workaholic and
chain smoker were not good allies for his
diabetic condition. On 7th April 1963 he was
taken to hospital in Aden with coronary
thrombosis. After a few weeks in hospital in
Aden he was considered strong enough to
travel to England for specialist treatment.
He tried to live a normal life in London but
was taken ill and died in hospital on 24th
June 1963. |
