Married Quarters at 49 Klosterhofer Strasse, Schleswig

Ken was a Corporal and great friends with Roland Pickering at RAF Schleswigland. When the Dunn's first daughter, Janet, was born, Roland & Joan became her god-parents.

Ken was posted to Aden and was there from 63-65 with 37 Squadron (Shackletons),. Coincidentally, Roland and Joan were also in Aden, from '63-'64 but for some reason neither knew the other was there.

During Ken's tour of duty in Aden, like many other service families at the time, the Dunn family went for a holiday to Nyali Beach, Mombasa, Kenya.

"Borrowing 100/130 octane aviation fuel........I can on only remember doing it once for our trip to Berlin to see England play West Germany at the Olympic stadium.    There were eight of us on that marathon trip...Roly, in his old Mercedes 190, and myself in my first ever car, a 1949 standard VW Beetle with cable brakes, non-synched gears, 0-60 mph in about 10 minutes or should I say 55mph as that would be its top speed with 4 up...Three of our passengers were MP's Bill Penman, Johnny Beale, Phil Jones all of whom knew about the 'borrowed' fuel of course (but didn't want to know)

If I remember rightly we were allowed 40 litres of petrol coupons a month at a cost of 5 shillings. It was about 1200 miles round trip to Berlin so you can see we needed a little help. We carried as many 5 gallon jerry cans as we could (mobile time bombs).

It was a bit unnerving, putting it politely, going through the Russian Zone with regular check points and Military Patrols.  We were not allowed to stop so it's a good job we didn't break down. My main worry was with using the 100 octane fuel as it could cause  overheating and possible  valve burn- out , so I'd been told. Anyway it didn't do our cars any good and we both changed cars shortly afterwards. We were not allowed cameras, which was a pity as we have no record of that trip."

Ken & Hazel are now retired and living in the little village of Yarm, North Yorkshire, UK. Only in May 2005 did they make contact with long-lost friend, Joan Pickering in Western Australia, via this website and now they are touch by mail and phone. Joan is god-parent to Ken & Hazel's daughter Janet who was born in Schleswig.
