Mr Burnett,
to most of us pupils, was a
stern, unfriendly, fierce man. He looked
quite like a Roman soldier in his stature
and had short,
dark curly hair. This was our Latin teacher. Amo, amas, amat, amamus, amatis, amant....but
there was no love lost here. Who dared forget our verb conjugations? Known for sitting cross-legged on his
desk whilst exploring his nasal cavities Mr Burnett would threaten to string up by the feet
to the ceiling fan any kids who misbehaved. We had no doubt he would carry out
his threat.
"His name was Burnett and he was a big dark haired bloke.
Once during registration I said I would walk out of his lesson if he hit me
again and that day he did. I got as far as the door and he asked me where I
was going and I said to the head and he said the head wouldn't be impressed
with my work so I sat down. I got a medal from some of the lads in the class
and I never took another Latin lesson again". Mike Wilson. Jan 64 - Aug 65
Mr Fletcher, the maths teacher, had a habit of turning swiftly
and throwing either the chalk or even sometimes the wooden blackboard eraser at
anyone he thought was misbehaving. He often missed or hit the wrong person. It doesn't sound possible in today's context but 40 years ago
in the 60's things were
different.
"On a slightly more sombre note, I do
remember the nasty maths teacher who would throw board rubbers.
Unfortunately I was once the target of his well aimed missile! Both
myself (being a very shy and quiet child) and my classmates were shocked
and I remember everyone being very sympathetic towards me at the time
and making dire remarks about what they would do to him given half a
chance!" Sheena McGillvray.
French Teacher. "She was extremely nice and I
admit I had a crush on her, but never took an apple to school for her. I tried
to do my best in her class and still remember my basic French, even 40 years
later." Peter Pickering. Anyone remember her name?
